Annual gathering

April 30th is the evening of our annual Membership Gathering and Star Party. Terri & Larry Seiler have very generously allowed us to hold the party at their Los Senderos Ranch located at 8409 N. US Highway 281. We’ll start at 7:30 pm. While waiting for it to get dark enough for the Star Party, we’ll let you know what we’ve been doing this past year. Refreshments will be served. We sure hope you can join us!

GETTING READY FOR THE BIG DAY!

Blanco banner

Pending TxDOT approval to erect International Dark Sky Community signs at Blanco's four major gateways, Stefan Roesch (left) and City Council member, Laura Swinson, decided to use the small billboard on their property on Hwy 281 South to proclaim to the large Eclipse crowds anticipated to arrive soon that the City is a recognized International Dark Sky Community, worthy of a return visit to enjoy the night. Assisting with the sign are Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky members David Loose and Wayne Gosnell (right).

2024 FACEBOOK POETRY CONTEST

We promised to share other poems from our contest in January. Here is the one submitted by Deborah Castro who has been a member of our Facebook page since September 29, 2021.

The Night is for Flight

The night is for flight, said the black shiny bird.
He stretched his wings and spread the word,
We will soar towards the moon, the stars and the horizon.
We will meet our families and friends and feast in the south for the winter.
Oh, it is a difficult challenge these days to navigate big bright lights over parking lots and haze.
Gather up your courage and let us take flight because we have only a few dark hours at night.
Dark skies are fading fast, please save what you can, do us birds a good favor and lend us a hand.
